MBBS, MPHC, FRANZCO
Specialist Ophthalmologist, Medical Retina

Dr Andrew Kaines is a specialist ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon with subspecialty training in diseases of the macula and retina. His clinical work includes age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vein occlusions and other medical retinal conditions. He is a Fellow of RANZCO and holds specialist registration with AHPRA.

Dr Kaines provides imaging-led assessment, treatment and long-term monitoring for retinal conditions that may affect central vision. His areas of care include:
Assessment and ongoing management of dry and wet AMD, including intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment where clinically appropriate.
Monitoring and treatment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema, including retinal laser or injections when required.
Assessment and treatment of branch and central retinal vein occlusions, with careful monitoring of retinal swelling and vision.
Diagnosis and management of conditions such as central serous chorioretinopathy and other disorders affecting the macula and retinal blood vessels.
After completing specialist ophthalmology training at Prince of Wales Hospital, Dr Kaines undertook advanced international medical retina fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in California. These roles allowed him to work alongside internationally recognised retinal specialists and develop advanced experience in retinal diagnosis and treatment.
After returning to Australia, he was appointed to a medical retina subspecialty position at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has also contributed to research into new treatments and diagnostic techniques for diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions and central serous chorioretinopathy.
Retinal conditions can affect vision in different ways, and some require ongoing monitoring over time. When you consult with Dr Kaines at our Eastwood rooms, you can expect a thorough, clear and personalised approach to your care.
The pages below cover the two conditions Dr Kaines names first in his clinical work, and the treatment he uses most often to protect central vision.
How AMD damages the macula, the difference between the dry and wet forms, and what treatment can do for each.
Eye conditionHow diabetes damages the retina, why it can progress without symptoms, and the checks that catch it early.
TreatmentWhat an anti-VEGF injection involves, the conditions it treats, and what to expect on the day and afterwards.
